Anal Cancer Screenings
Anal cancer screenings are recommended for higher-risk populations, such as adults living with HIV ages 35+, and any adults ages 45+ who have a history of anal receptive sex. The screening process includes:
Collection of an anal swab for STIs and anal cytology (pap smear)
Visualization of the anal canal with a high-resolution anoscope (HRA)
The procedure takes just 15–20 minutes and requires no preparation or douching.
Jake Rickoll, DNP completed his doctorate practice project at LSU on the practicality of screening for anal cancer in HIV+ adults. He has been an active member of the International Anal Neoplasia Society (IANS) for more than 7 years, with advanced training alongside HRA experts in San Francisco, New York City, and New Orleans. Jake has presented his research to clinicians locally and internationally—from New Orleans to Peru and Amsterdam.
In addition, Jake’s background as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) at Tulane Emergency Department informs his deep commitment to patient privacy and the sensitive nature of sexual health concerns.
